O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She advanced to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She experienced significant defeats in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and the bottom two spots as well as the bottom two. Judges were horrified by this, and told the audience that Melissa was the top contestant. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. The judge Werner said, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would win in the Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol straight away.
